New cat generator sets run on 100% hydrogen
October 2021 - Caterpillar recently announced that it will begin offering Cat generator sets that can run on 100% hydrogen, including fully renewable green hydrogen, on a design-to-order basis. As an official dealer of Cat engines and power systems, we are of course proud and happy about this. It is yet another step in the energy transition.
Global leader
Again, it’s clear that Caterpillar is a global leader in developing sustainable technologies. Because in addition to the new, 100% hydrogen generator set, more hydrogen solutions are under development, some of which will also be launched on the market shortly. We’ll list them all in this article.
Portfolio of hydrogen solutions
The 100% hydrogen generator set fits in perfectly with Caterpillar’s portfolio of hydrogen solutions, including the gas turbine generator sets from Solar® Turbines. These have been running on high hydrogen mixtures for decades and today, they even run on 100% hydrogen.
New 100% hydrogen gas generator set
The Cat G3516H gas generator set, which will be available from Q4 2021, is specifically configured to run on 100% hydrogen. Initially available as a demonstration unit in North America and Europe, this gas generator set has an output of 1250 kW for continuous, primary and load management applications at 50 or 60 Hz.
New generator sets that run on 25% hydrogen
Later this year, Caterpillar will also begin the phased roll-out in North America and Europe of the Cat CG132B, CG170B, G3500H, G3500 (with Fast Response) and CG260 gas generator sets configured to run on natural gas to which 25% of hydrogen has been added.
In addition, the company will offer retrofit kits that provide hydrogen blending options of up to 25% hydrogen for select generator sets built on these engine platforms. Production of new natural gas generator sets and retrofit kits that can run on 25% hydrogen will start in the 4th quarter of 2022.
Plans to work with 100% hydrogen
The development and launch of a range of products and upgrades to existing Cat gas generators are part of Caterpillar’s hydrogen plans. These solutions anticipate the potential growth in customer demand as the hydrogen supply infrastructure continues to improve.

Continuing to invest in hydrogen solutions
Caterpillar has more than 35 years of experience with high-hydrogen fuels. With the generator sets that can run on 100% hydrogen, this legacy is further expanded.
